Q.  How do I return my HP Products? I'm not included in the customer segment.
A.  While we do have this programme in most parts of Asia, we still have some customers not yet covered by this service. We appreciate your concern and desire to dispose of your HP products in an environmental manner and wholeheartedly endorse this approach.

On this occasion we must direct you towards local disposal practices though do suggest that you occasionally visit www.hp.com/recycle where all new countries and customer segments are immediately added as soon as implemented.
Q.  How much do I have to pay to participate in this programme?
A.  We offer free recycling service. However, for the pick-up of computer and printing hardware products, wherein we have unique cases, where a third party logistics provider has to be hired to move extraordinary large quantities of equipment or the pick-up location is outside the metropolitan area, costs incurred may have to be passed back to you. For details of the cost, please send email at hptbp@scfulfil.com.
Q.  What products are covered under the HP Planet Partners Return and Recycling Programme?
A.  HP offers to take back:
- Empty Original HP inkjet and LaserJet print cartridges.
- End-of-Life Original HP Long Life Consumables such as drum kits, fuser kits, transfer kits and toner bottles.

- Products for medicinal, measures or analytical works (formerly built by HP, nowadays Agilent Technologies).
Q.  Can I return not functioning or broken computer and printing hardware?
A.  It doesn't matter if the products are broken or not functioning properly anymore. However, they must not be stripped (e.g. returning casing, cover). Exception: Damaged monitors (CRT) must not be shipped due to safety regulations of the carriers!
Q.  What is the maximum size/weight of a box?
A.  In general, the allowed maximum weight of a box is 30 kg (limited by carrier). The packaging materials weigh around 2 kg, therefore the total weight of the products placed in a box should not exceed 28 kg.

A.  Yes, we offer packaging service at extra cost. For more details, please send email at hptbp@scfulfil.com
Q.  What happens if certain equipment/box have been given by mistake?
A.  The customer has transferred full title of the equipment contained to HP. HP and our recycling partners are not liable for equipment that is picked up in error. Thus, any equipment picked up by mistake cannot be recovered.
Q.  Where can I get more information on how to recycle my HP products?
A.  Additional information on this programme can be found in the recycling website at http://www.hp.com/recycle and select your country.

Financials

Q.  Is HP reselling products/parts? Is there a refund?
A.  Whole products received into the HP Planet Partners Programme will not be resold but recycled only; hence, a refund cannot be offered. However, some usable components from these products such as hard drives, memory, processor chips, etc. may be removed, refurbished and resold. This process helps HP to lower the overall programme costs to better serve our customers.

Recycling/processing

Q.  Where does the HP product physically go when it's returned?
A.  The cartridges and computer and printing hardware first go to a collection centre, and then they are sorted, and bulk-shipped to our central pan-Asian recycling partners who disassemble or process the parts for recycling.
Q.  Does HP use a partner to do the recycling?
A.  Yes. In all countries where we offer this programme, we enlist the expertise of several logistics providers to collect and return cartridges, computer and printing hardware. Once these products have been returned, the recycling process involves multiple vendors, including companies, which will utilise these materials for the manufacture of new products. And, don't forget that the customer is our first, and in many ways, most important partner. The customer makes the decision to recycle their products with HP.
Q.  Does HP incinerate the HP products returned?
A.  The focus is on recycling. Hence HP tries to use material recovery techniques wherever possible to maximise percentage recovery. Indeed, this is a metric tracked within the programme with demanding incremental targets. However, it is inevitable that all materials cannot be recovered because of technical limitations. In such cases, energy recovery is pursued which is the next step down the waste hierarchy ladder from recycling.
Q.  What happens to confidential data still on the hard drive?
A.  During the dismantling and recycling process, drives and disks are treated physically, which normally erases all data. In addition, HP recycling partners have no right to use, reproduce, distribute, decompile, modify or copy any HP or third party Firmware or Software that may be contained in the product. The recycling partners have the obligation to insure that any such Software or Firmware is erased (by means of ultra-violet light exposure) prior to the sale of any product or parts thereof.
Q.  What is the hardware recycling process?
A.   1. Dismantling the product.
2. Sorting and reuse of components (usually chips).
3. Material separation and recycling.
4. Energy recovery.
5. Disposal.
Q.  What is the supplies recycling process?
A.   1. Printing cartridges are picked up from the drop points and transported to collection centres and then shipped to our recycling partners who disassembles or processes the parts for recycling.
2. On arrival at the recycling facilities, printing cartridges are sorted and shredded.
3. Shredded cartridge materials are separated into plastics, metals, and residuals of ink, toner or foam.
4. Plastics and metals are further processed into raw materials to be used in everyday new products like pen, ruler, bench, etc.
5. Any remaining materials and residual ink or toner are utilised to generate energy or disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner.
Q.  What is made from returned LaserJet and inkjet print cartridges?
A.  All returned original HP print cartridges go through a multi-phase recycling process. Original HP print cartridges are reduced to raw materials, which can be then used to make new metal and plastic products.

While a majority of materials are recycled, some portion is also utilised in energy recovery, offsetting fossil fuel consumption.
Q.  What percentage of the original HP inkjet or LaserJet print cartridges are recycle?
A.  HP recycles as much as possible of the cartridges returned for recycling. The recycling processes are designed to maximise the materials recovered, and to make the materials ready for reuse in other applications.

In 2004, 100% of the materials in returned HP LaserJet print cartridges were recycled or recovered for energy. An average of 59% of the total material (by weight) was recycled.

In 2004, 76% of the materials in the returned HP inkjet print cartridges were recycled or recovered for energy. An average of 55% of the total material (by weight) was recycled. Only 5% of the total material (by weight) was sent to landfill as ash after processing.
Q.  Does HP recycle other cartridges besides its own?
A.  No. HP collects and recycles only its own original HP inkjet or LaserJet print cartridges. To ensure their smooth operation, our print cartridge recycling facilities are designed to process product materials with which we are familiar through original design and manufacture. Consequently, HP accepts only original HP cartridges in its print cartridge-recycling programme.

Product related information

Q.  Where can I get more information on the ingredients/content used in HP Products?
A.  Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for many original HP print cartridges can be obtained by visiting the HP website: www.hp.com/environment
Q.  What is HP doing to make HP products more environmentally friendly?
A.  HP assigns environmental product stewards to most new products under development. These specialists have the role of educating and guiding product design teams on practices that reduce the impact of the product on the environment, in every aspect of production, use and recycling. Throughout the product design and manufacturing process, we apply "Design for Environment" principles including: production efficiencies, reducing energy consumption during product use, as well as end of life take back and recycling.

Some of the steps we've taken to improve the environmental performance of our products:
- Reduce hazardous materials, waste and emissions in the manufacturing process.
- Reduce the number of parts in our print cartridges.
- Decrease the number of plastic resins used in LaserJet cartridges.
- HP has a corporate-wide ISO 14001 certification.
- Specify environmental standards for our suppliers to meet.
- Use less material overall and more recyclable material in our packaging.

Packaging

Q.  Is original HP print cartridge packaging recyclable?
A.  HP designs its packaging to be recyclable where practical. The recyclability of the packaging alone, when not used to return a cartridge for recycling depends on the availability of municipal recycling programmes and on the package's design.

For LaserJet print cartridges, the box containing the cartridge is recyclable where cardboard recycling is available. For in-box packaging materials, the majority of our toner cartridges are shipped using molded pulp (paper) end caps. This material can be recycled where cardboard is recycled. In a minority of products, polystyrene end caps are used - these can be recycled where polystyrene recycling is available. Many monochrome toner cartridges are shipped in polyethylene bags, which can be recycled where recycling is available.

For inkjet, the paperboard and inserts used in original HP inkjet cartridge packaging can be recycled in most municipal recycling programmes where recycling programmes exist. The polystyrene trays, which protect the print heads from being damaged when dropped, can be recycled where special polystyrene recycling programmes exist.
Q.  Does HP use recycled materials in its packaging?
A.  Yes. HP uses toner-packaging boxes made out of recycled materials and prints its toner in-box literature on recycled paper with soy-based inks. In addition, in some countries, HP uses end-caps for LaserJet toner cartridges made from 100% recycled materials. For its inkjet packaging, HP uses paperboard with recycled content, and paper with inkjet content for its inserts wherever practical. The amount of recycled material used varies from region-to-region due to material availability.
