HP 8-ink colour photo printing - studio quality photos with superior colour and precision Prepare for a whole new colour sensation with HP 8-ink colour photo printing.
Vitality and emotion will be added to every photo, thanks to beautifully real hues combined with a heightened level of precision and detail. With HP, your images will move beyond the realms of everyday colour.

What is 8-ink colour printing with HP PhotoREt Pro?

HP 8-ink colour printing is the new benchmark in photo printing. The highly advanced HP PhotoREt Pro colour layering technology combines up to 32 superfine 5 picolitre ink droplets into every printed pixel, for up to 72.9 million directly printable colours and 4097 shades of pure grey. The result is enhanced colour accuracy, improved shadow detail, grain-free printing and a high level of precision.

What do you need to enjoy HP 8-ink colour printing?

8-ink colour printing is achieved by combining three specialised cartridges*: the new HP 59 grey photo inkjet print cartridge (containing dark grey, light grey, and a new photo black), the HP 58 photo inkjet print cartridge (containing light cyan, light magenta, and black ink) and the HP 57 tri-colour inkjet print cartridge (containing cyan, magenta, and yellow inks). Together, they give you an even wider colour palette for fuller flesh tones, incredible shadows, details and seamless colour transitions.

*Only the new HP Photosmart 7960 photo printer accommodates up to three print cartridges simultaneously
to achieve 8-ink printing. A spare print cartridge storage slot holds a fourth cartridge when not in use.

What are the benefits?

With HP's breakthrough 8-ink printing with HP PhotoREt Pro colour layering technology, you will enjoy:
Studio-quality colour
Stunning black and white photos
Photos that last up to 73 years*
Reliable performance and results
Ease of use

Studio quality colour
HP 8-ink colour printing redefines the state-of-the-art in photo printing. The highly advanced HP PhotoREt Pro colour layering technology produces imperceptible image grain, including images with metallic elements, skin tones and clouds for exceptional studio quality photos.

In addition, HP PhotoRET Pro results in a significantly broader range of colours, including an extensive range of grey tones and dark tones for greater colour accuracy, enhanced shadow detail and artistic impact.

Stunning black and white photos
Composite colours are not mixed to create black and white prints. The result is true neutral grey and deep photo black inks. You'll enjoy professional results that bring out the definition, precision and soul in every black and white portrait. Everything is precisely printed without the appearance of distracting red or blue hues.

The HP 57, HP 58, HP 59 inkjet print cartridge combination (with a total of 9-ink colours) offers both photo black and pigment-based black ink. The HP Photosmart 7960 photo printer only uses the photo black ink in the HP 59 inkjet print cartridge during photo printing which means that 8 out of the 9 available inks are used - hence 8-ink colour printing. The pigment-based black found in the HP 58 photo inkjet print cartridge is reserved for printing black text. In addition, if heavy text printing is anticipated, the HP 59 grey photo inkjet print cartridge can be replaced with a dedicated HP 56 black inkjet print cartridge for fast, high volume text printing.

Photos that last up to 73 years*
HP lets you freeze a moment in time and preserve it for generations to come. The HP 8-ink colour printing system produces photos that resist fading more than twice as long as most traditionally processed photos*. All thanks to HP's patented dye-based ink formula and the protective quality of HP Colourfast Glossy Photo Paper.

Reliable performance and results
An HP inkjet print cartridge is sublimely engineered and forms an integral role of a complete HP printing system.

For example, during ink ejection an on-cartridge microchip controls up to 40,000 ink ejections per second from 500 ink nozzles. Each droplet is delivered with a perfectly controlled explosion that lasts a mere 2-millionth of a second at a temperature 7 times hotter than the sun. All performed with unerring accuracy and repeated unfailingly over the entire lifespan of each cartridge.

Complementing these high performance print cartridges are inks that undergo the most rigorous development process in the industry. To perfect each ink formulation, our scientists subject them to hundreds of tests over a rigorous 3-year development cycle. The end result is ink that is free from contaminants for clog-free printing and perfectly engineered for high precision colour performance.

Clearly, an HP print cartridge is more than just an ink reservoir or container. It constitutes the driving force behind each HP printer. Never compromise, go for the best with HP.

Ease of Use
HP inkjet print cartridges excel in making things easier for the user. HP smart printing technology features in the printer and inkjet print cartridges provide ink-level status monitoring and alerts that accurately predict when a cartridge needs replacement. Coupled with easy ink cartridge access and fail-safe installation design, HP inks remain dependable and friendly during your daily printing routine.

How does it work?

HP PhotoREt Pro uses 8-ink printing, uniform dot placement, advanced colour imaging, and exclusive HP halftoning algorithms to deliver an expanded colour gamut, exceptional colour accuracy, and impressive black and white photo printing.
Halftoning Algorithms
HP PhotoREt Pro uses proprietary halftoning algorithms to intelligently distribute all of the different ink layer combinations that the printer is capable of printing. The printer's ability to produce an extensive number of colours, including a broad range of grey and dark tones, combined with uniquely applied HP halftoning techniques, enable the printer to create smooth, continuous tone transitions between the different layers of ink on the page, for fine image detail.

Expanded Colour Gamut
The addition of the light and dark grey inks results in a larger colour gamut, including a significant increase in the number of dark tones, increased colour accuracy, enhanced shadow detail and reduced grain in images. With the addition of the new grey inks, the printing system can create many more possible ink combinations than systems that use fewer inks. Combining the new grey photo inks with the colour inks enables the printing system to produce a broader range of chromatic dark colours with less image grain than possible when using the colourants in other printing systems.

Impressive Colour Accuracy with HP colour imaging (colour maps)
HP PhotoREt Pro colour layering technology uses proprietary colour maps that make optimal use of the printer's broad colour gamut. Finely tuned colour maps deliver accurate colour shades - from a vast range of grey and dark tones to a broad array of bright vibrant colours. Special attention to light tones and skin tones in the development of HP colour maps enables the printer to produce natural, realistic colour shades for true-to-life photo quality.
